Energy Efficiency

Over 25% of the heat in your home escapes through windows and doors, so energy efficient windows not only keep your home warm, they are also good for the environment.  The Government’s commitment to reducing energy emissions and the potentially harmful effects of global warming are central to new legislation requiring that replacement windows and doors meet minimum standards of energy efficiency.

Window Energy Ratings (WER) were initially introduced in 2004 by the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRG) which is operated by the Glass and Glazing Federation (GGF).
Window Energy Ratings are based on a scale of A to G in exactly the same way that household appliances such as refrigerators are rated – A being the most efficient, G being the least efficient.

In so far as they affect windows and doors, Window Energy Ratings take into account the following factors: -
  • The effectiveness of a window preventing heat loss from your home.
  • The amount of light and heat a window allows in from the sun, known as solar heat transmission or solar heat gain.
  • Air leakage through the seals of a window.
  • The proportion of the total window taken up by the frame.
Ecoseal’s casement windows are ‘A’ Rated as standard.  This is illustrated by these thermal images showing heat loss in red before new windows and doors were installed, compared to the lack of heat loss after installation.

GGF Energy Saving Calculator

According to the Glass and Glazing Federation energy saving calculator, a detached property having Ecoseal ‘A’ Rated casement windows installed, will over a ten year period, save the following: -

Saving on heating bills    £5,185.37
CO² Saving                     21.95 tonnes
Carbon Saving                5.99 tonnes

These figures are based on a detached property with typically sized single glazed timber windows and electric heating, having Ecoseal ‘A’ Rated PVCu windows installed.  Assumed inflation rate for the heating bills is 10% per annum.
